This only applies to the Behavioral Medicine and Rehabilitation Neuropsychology Tracks
As part of the funding we receive from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), psychology residents who match with the University of Washington School of Medicine Psychology Internship Program in the Behavioral Medicine and Rehabilitation Neuropsychology Tracks, are required to obtain a National Provider Identifier (NPI) number during their training year. This HRSA requirement ensures that all trainees funded through HRSA programs are appropriately registered as health service providers within the national healthcare system. Psychology residents will be guided through the NPI application process after the start of the training year. For more information about this requirement you can visit our FAQ page for greater details.
What is an NPI number?
The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a unique, 10-digit identification number issued by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to all U.S. healthcare providers. It serves as a standardized identifier for billing, electronic health records, and other administrative purposes within the national healthcare system.
Why am I required to obtain an NPI number as a psychology resident?
Because the University of Washington’s Psychology Internship Program receives support from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), all HRSA-funded trainees are required to obtain an NPI number before completing their training. This requirement applies to psychology residents and ensures compliance with federal funding guidelines.
When do I need to apply for an NPI number?
You will be asked to complete your NPI application during your internship year. Program leadership will provide guidance and step-by-step instructions to ensure your application is completed correctly and in compliance with HRSA expectations.
How do I apply for an NPI number?
The application process is free and can be completed online through the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES). Applicants will need to provide identifying information such as name, contact information, professional degree, and institutional affiliation.
Does obtaining an NPI mean I am billing for services?
No. Psychology residents do not independently bill for services during internship. The NPI is a federal administrative requirement for HRSA-funded trainees and is used for identification purposes only—not for billing or insurance reimbursement.
Will my NPI stay with me after internship?
Yes. Once you are assigned an NPI number, it remains your permanent provider identifier throughout your professional career as a health service psychologist.
